Say the word “Africa” to yourself. What images does it conjure? Are they images you’ve seen from television, or articles in the newspaper? Do you feel as though you have a good grasp of the countries that make up Africa? Well, we didn’t. In fact, it is largely due to our own curiosity and fascination that we chose to undertake Throw. As one of the least understood continents on the planet, we couldn’t remain in the dark about the culture, music, language and history of these little-known countries. So, Throw was born. Ben VanderVeen, the movie’s director, traveled to eastern Africa for a number of summers. On one of these trips he brought a Frisbee™ and began to toss it around to his new African friends. People picked up on this sport very quickly, and, as they say, the rest is history. Or hopefully, history in-the-making.
